Andreas Ludwig Previn was born to a Russian-Jewish family in Berlin, Germany, in 1929. At age seven, he played a piano concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic——with excellent reviews. In 1938 Andre and his family emigrated to the United States to avoid the Nazi-Regime in Germany. They settled in Los Angeles where Previn attended Hollywood High School. He quickly made a name for himself as a brilliant pianist and composer who excelled in both jazz and classical music. At age seventeen, still in high school, Previn was appointed music director at MGM Studios. In subsequent years, he was at various times conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra——while composing film scores, musicals, a cello concerto, a guitar concerto, and while recording as a jazz pianist with virtuoso side-men. In recent years, Previn has concentrated on classical music in conducting and composing activities. His opera, A Streetcar Named Desire, premiered at the San Francisco Opera in 1998. He wrote a memoir of his early Hollywood years, No Minor Chords, which was published in 1991. He has scored over fifty films, received thirteen Academy Award nominations, and won four Oscars.
