Zubin Mehta was born in 1936 in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, to Temina Mehta and her husband Mehli, violinist and founding conductor of the Bombay Symphony Orchestra. After St. Mary’s High School, Zubin studied music in Vienna under the eminent instructor Hans Swarowsky. Among Mehta’s classmates at the Vienna academy were Claudio Abbado and Daniel Barenboim. At age twenty-two Mehta won the International Conducting Competition in Liverpool, and was eventually appointed conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. At various times, Mehta has held senior conducting posts in the symphony orchestras of Montreal, Los Angeles, New York, Israel, Munich, and the Bavarian State Opera, In June 1994, Mehta conducted the Mozart Requiem, along with the members of the Sarajevo Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, raising funds in remembrance of the thousands killed in Yugoslav wars. In 1999 he conducted Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (Resurrection) in the vicinity the Buchenwald concentration camp in Weimer, with both the Bavarian State Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra sitting alongside each other. Mehta is married to former film actress Nancy Kovack. His life has been documented in Terry Sander’s film Portrait of Zubin Mehta, and in Martin Bookspan’s book, The Zubin Mehta Story.
