Lorin Varencove Maazel was born in France on March 6, 1930. His American parents brought him up in the United States. He was a child prodigy, taking his first conducting lessons at age seven and making his debut at eight. At twelve he America to conduct major orchestras. He made his violin debut at the age of fifteen. He later studied at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1960 he became the first American to conduct at Bayreuth. He was conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin from l965 to 1971 and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1965 to 1975. Maazel was chosen to succeed George Szell as Musical Director of the Cleveland Orchestra. He encountered fierce opposition from the orchestra members, but finally won them over with his rich interpretations that were so dramatically different from Szell’s characteristic crisp, defined precision in performance. After conducting positions at Vienna, Pittsburgh, France, and Bavaria, Maazel was appointed music director of the New York Philharmonic where he is currently ranked among the best in the great tradition of superb conductors. In March, 2006, Maazel toured Asia. He also composed an opera, 1984, based on George Orwell’s famous book.
