As the fifth-oldest orchestra in the United States, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) has a legacy of superb concerts, acclaimed recordings, and highly successful international tours. In 1893, President William Howard Taft’s soon-to-be wife founded the Cincinnati Orchestra Association. The CSO gave its first concerts in 1895 at Pike’s Opera House, and a year later moved to Music Hall. The first conductor was Frank van der Stucken who served until 1907, followed by Leopold Stokowski in 1909. The orchestra grew into an evolution that gained them national prominence under conductors Ernst Kunwald, Eugene Ysaye, Fritz Reiner, Eugene Goossens, Thor Johnson, Max Rudolf, Tom Schippers, Michael Gielen, and Jesus Lopez Cobos——who conducted the CSO in their first national television appearance on PBS-YV in 1997. In addition to its normal schedule, the CSO is the house orchestra for the Cincinnati May Festival, the oldest continuing choral festival in the Western Hemisphere. In 1977, Erich Kunzel was appointed conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. It enjoys a reputation for high-level concerts with visiting celebrity guest musicians and vocalists at Riverbend, Cincinnati’s outdoor music venue.
