Charles Wadsworth performs extensively with his "Charles Wadsworth and Friends" programs. He founded the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in 1969, leading it as Artistic Director and pianist for twenty years and bringing chamber music the unprecedented international popularity that it enjoys today. Mr. Wadsworth instituted the Society’s commissioning program, which produced major chamber works from a wide range of composers including Boulez, Barber, Menotti, Bolcom, Corigliano, Lieberson, Berio, Foss, Crumb, Corea, Harbison, and Bernstein. From 1977 to 2010, Mr. Wadsworth was the Artistic Director and Host for the daily Chamber Music Concerts at the Spoleto USA Festival in Charleston, South Carolina. At the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, he created the concept for these concerts as founder, artistic director, and pianist, beginning in 1960. A renowned exponent of song repertoire, Wadsworth was the piano collaborator of choice for such illustrious singers as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Hermann Prey, Shirley Verrett, Frederica von Stade, Kathleen Battle, and Jessye Norman and toured as concert partner for twelve seasons with Beverly Sills. Wadsworth’s many honors include The Republic of France’s Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters, and Italy’s Cavaliere Ufficiale in the Order of Merit. He has received New York City's highest cultural award, the Handel Medallion; the Richard J. Bogomolny National Award from Chamber Music America; South Carolina's Order of the Palmetto; and the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award. Mr. Wadsworth was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2010, and holds honorary doctorates from the University of South Carolina, Converse College, Coker College, and Connecticut College. He has performed at the White House for five U.S. Presidents: Kennedy, Nixon, Ford, Carter and Reagan.
