The Juilliard Quartet was founded in 1946 by William Schuman. Town Hall in New York City was the scene of the Juilliard Quartet’s first public performance on December 23, 1947. The following July, the Quartet made its debut at Tanglewood, making history at the same time performing all of the six string quartets of Bartok for the first time at one concert. The Juilliard Quartet recorded the six Bartok quartets for Columbia Records first in 1949 and again in 1963 and 1981, and has maintained its association with Columbia and its successor SONY Classical. In 1986 the Juilliard Quartet was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the National Academy for Recording Arts and Sciences for the recording of the Bartok quartets. Their recordings of Beethoven, Schoenberg, Debussy and Ravel quartets have received Grammy awards. Through the Quartet’s career, performances have been issued on over 100 releases, and a seven-compact-disc series was issued to commemorate the Juilliard Quartet’s 50th anniversary. In 1954 the Quartet performed the world premiere of Aaron Copland’s Quartet for Piano and Strings, and in 1962, the Juilliard Quartet replaced the Budapest String Quartet as the quartet-in-residence at the Library of Congress, an honored position they still hold today. Another landmark achievement was their performance in concert and recording, in 1991, of the string quartets of Elliott Carter. The Quartet had given the premiere of Carter’s Second Quartet in 1960, and the Third Quartet in 1973. Carter’s four string quartets, “the most celebrated cycle in American chamber music,” were performed in sequence at a concert at Juilliard to celebrate the Quartet’s 45th anniversary.
