Founded in 1978 by Louis Botto, Chanticleer is the only independent full-time classical vocal ensemble in the United States. The San Francisco-based group consisting of twelve male vocalists, ranging from countertenor to bass, is internationally recognized as “an orchestra of voices.” Over the years Chanticleer has developed a reputation for its vivid interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance, jazz, and gospel to venturesome new music.
Chanticleer’s touring season takes them all across the U.S. and abroad and typically consists of a cappella performances. In addition to performing classic pieces, Chanticleer has commissioned more than seventy composers in its history, earning it the inaugural Dale Warland Commissioning Award and the ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming for the 2006-07 Season.
The ensemble has recorded over twenty-five CDs; their Colors of Love won a GRAMMY Award in 2000 for Best Small Ensemble Performance (with or without Conductor), as well as the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award for Best Classical Album. Their 2002 recording of Sir John Tavener’s Lamentations and Praises was awarded two GRAMMY awards: one for Classical Best Small Ensemble Performance (with or without Conductor) and one for Best Classical Contemporary Composition.
Additionally, Chanticleer was named 2008 Ensemble of the Year by Musical America.
