To audiences across the United States, the sound of Martin Bookspan’s voice means classical music. As a narrator he has appeared with many of America’s great symphony orchestras, and he is in great demand as a pre-concert lecturer. On radio and television he has been “The Voice of the New York Philharmonic” as well as commentator for “Live from Lincoln Center” and “Live from Studio 8-M” telecasts. Martin Bookspan served as Contributing Editor to Stereo Review, Video Review, and Ovation magazines, and as Tape Critic and Columnist for the New York Times. He has written four highly regarded books on music – books used often by scholars and students. The Concert Artists Guild in New York awarded Martin Bookspan a Lifetime Service Citation in 1986. In 1991 The Mannes College of Music awarded him an honorary Doctor of Music degree and in May 1995 he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Suffolk University in Boston. For many years he was “Classical Music Expert” for the Prodigy Interactive computer service and for five years he was the Announcer for “The Guiding Light” (CBS), the longest continuously running program in American broadcasting.
