The President’s Own United States Marine Band, America’s oldest professional musical organization, has been part of the events that have shaped our national heritage. For 200 years, its musicians have served people, performing music that honors, inspires, consoles and connects. The Marine Band was established by an Act of Congress signed by President John Adams on July 11, 1798. The band’s mission is to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Thomas Jefferson recognized the unique relationship between the band and the Chief Executive by giving the Marine Band the title, The President’s Own. As The President’s Own, the Marine Band has had an integral role in our government’s official life. Single out significant events in America’s history, and the Marine Band is there performing for every Presidential inaugural since Thomas Jefferson’s, laying the cornerstone of the Washington Monument, accompanying President Abraham Lincoln to Pennsylvania for his Gettysburg address, dedicating the Statue of Liberty, and leading the funeral procession of President John F. Kennedy. Marine Band performances have drawn acclaim from famous musicians, Presidents, the public, and media: John Phillip Sousa once said, “The Marine Band is the national band…as great among bands as America is among nations.” Ronald Reagan called the band “A national institution and national treasure.” And the Washington Post proclaimed the Marine Band as “…not only the best in the land but, very likely, the best in the world.” As America’s oldest professional musical organization, The President’s Own United States Marine Band has become part of the fabric of American life. As it readies to enter its third century, it looks to its rich musical history as a foundation for the future.
